Turn Professional
What do we mean by being a professional?
Being a professional is the way you conduct yourself with clients, the way you deal with staff, the way you strive for an efficient 'workflow' and the way you constantly look for new ways to improve your photography and the product you offer. If you consider being a professional the amount of money you make, you will not enjoy your 'professional career' and you should look to find a 'quick buck' elsewhere.
If you have the right attitude and want to start your own business, whether as a part time venture in tandem with another job or as a full time major part of your income, social photography is the way to go. If you prefer to take an accredited qualification, you must be prepared to spend at least four years at college and a considerable amount of money - in this case you need to look elsewhere. There are many universities and colleges running 'Photography courses', hopefully leading to various qualifications and maybe a career at the end. This art based business is very variable and no guarantees are given by any educational establishment that you will succeed - this will be up to you!

Start your own business and be your own boss
So what do you do? To start your own business, especially in photography, you need to decide on your strengths and what makes you most happy. Look down the check list: if you agree with most of the points, running your own photography business will be a real possibility.- Are you a proficient photographer, having taken a wide range of types of photographs for at least two years?
- Do you know your equipment really well?
- Do you like people, being prepared to listen to what they want with patience and tact?
- Do you have an orderly way of working, which is organised and methodical?
- Do you have a head for figures and not wayward with money?
- Are you creative and artistic?
- Do you have a good eye for a photograph, but are still happy to be experimental sometimes?
- Are you punctual, hard working and reliable?
If you find yourself agreeing with most of these points, being your own boss will be easy. So what area of photography do you work in? My courses are aimed at the social market, which is the Portraiture and Wedding areas of photography. If you think your talents lie in purely stock, sport or fashion photography at a professional level, there are no courses at present specifically for you, but you may wish to take any course to help hone your overall skills! You will be very welcome!
The course consists of nine modules on CD (these may be printed off for your own use) in PDF format, along with musical pictorial presentations for posing and image ideas. Membership lasts for initially 6 months and during this time you receive e-mail support while you build your business. Three modules are sent at a time every month, but you read, digest and execute the material as you feel fit and, with my help, you will soon be getting orders. There are forms for clients and keeping the books, advice on the tax situation as well as everything you need to take client orders and get organised.

This course is taken at home and is aimed at the photographer that initially wants to build their business and run it from their own home. This can be very successfully achieved by offering mobile studio facilities and sessions in the clients' own homes. Most homes and gardens can be used and, if not, location shoots can be very lucrative. The course consists of nine modules on CD (these may be printed off for your own use) in PDF format, along with musical pictorial presentations for posing and image ideas.
